The Final Day

I was so happy with everyone in today’s ZUMBA lesson at Latinmania Dance School.

Actually it was my last lesson there. Lots of people joined it even though today was the middle day of a 3 day holiday. Thank you so much, everyone.

One year and five months ago, I started my ZUMBA lessons here for 5 of my friends who were my ex-classmates at TAFE, English course for migrants. I almost lost myself because of my homesick feeling and weariness from my lack of English then.

Thanks to my friends’ support, I have continued my lessons. Firstly most of the members were Japanese, but now people of different nationalities are joining my lessons.

I realized people will be able to cross the border with a little courage. It’s not so difficult.

If I change myself, the environment surrounding me will also change. It’s up to myself.

I am going to start some new lessons at a different place from next month.

I hope I will be able to meet more new people there.

26 adults and 7 babies came to today’s ZUMBA at Southport Community Centre. Thanks, everyone!!

I always feel happy with sharing fun through the same hobby at the same time and place with everyone regardless of age, sex or nationality. I think it’s a true international exchange.

Actually I have another thing with which I can share fun with my friends.

It’s Salsa group lessons. It started from last Wednesday at Latinmania Dance School. The instructor is Alex, the producer of Latinamania.

I want to recommend all people who can’t join his night time lessons to join it.

I promise your ZUMBA movements will change to fabulous things if you learn real Salsa.

It’s been nearly 3 years since I started learning Salsa from Alex.

I could get confidence with my ZUMBA movements thanks to his lessons.

I think endorphins were secreted into my brain during my ZUMBA lessons today. It is said that they are produced when people feel happy and exercise for a long term like jogging etc.

I changed my standing position for instruction from the usual spot to a small stage in Latinmania because so many people came today.

It was successful. I could see everyone’s faces and all members could see my foot work as well.

They were getting into it with ‘ Hoo Hoo!! ‘ voices, which motivated me a lot. Thanks, everyone!!

It’s been one year and four months since I started my ZUMBA lessons on the Gold Coast, Australia. Firstly I ran only one lesson every Saturday morning for my 5 friends who used to be my ex-classmates at TAFE, English Course for migrants. They encouraged me a lot.

Honestly speaking, I was almost losing myself because of my homesick feeling (I immigrated to Australia 3 years ago).

I had thought my poor English caused everything bad and negative emotions had dogged me all the time until I started my ZUMBA lessons again in Australia.

Thanks to my family, friends, and Alex the producer of Latinmania Dance School, I’m running several ZUMBA lessons a week now.

I really appreciate everyone surrounding me.

Even though English is a bit of a struggle, I’m so happy.

I really love ZUMBA, as it makes people happy regardless of nationality and language.

I have run some ZUMBA lessons with my ZUMBA partner Megumi at Southport Community Centre and Lynne Richardson Community Centre (Molendinar).

As a result of our discussion, we have decided to work separately.

Megumi is planning a new job from next year and I think the job as a fitness instructor should basically be run by just one instructor, not 2 or 3, except for event lessons and joint lessons.

From September 2014,

I (Mayumi) will run Tuesday’s ZUMBA @ Southport Community Centre, 9:30-10:15am.　→

And she (Megumi) will run Wednesday’s ZUMBA @ Lynne Richardson Community Centre, 9:30-10:15.　→

Sorry for any inconvenience.

It has been 6 months since I started the lessons with her, which was a short period of time, but we have learned a lot of things from each other. I really appreciate her.

From now on, we will hold some joint lessons.

Girls’ ZUMBA lesson

Yesterday I met 22 girls from St. Hilda School. I ran a ZUMBA lesson as part of their training of 3 day rowing camp with my ZUMBA partner Megumi.

The lesson offer was given suddenly 2 days before that, which was a great opportunity for us.

We were surprised that they were much taller than us although they were much younger.

I was jealous of their long beautiful legs!!

Over 30 people joined our Milky Way ZUMBA lesson yesterday, 8/07/2014.

Everyone enjoyed dancing in yellow. In Japan, the image of Milky Way is yellow because of lot’s of stars.

Little ones were shining like stars!! They were so gorgeous!!

Megumi and I wore the costumes like this, Megumi was Hikoboshi and I was Orihime.

Miki, a nail technician, decorated my nails matching my costume design. My nails motivated me a lot!!

Have you heard of the Japanese Tanabata festival?

The festival is usually held on July 7, and celebrates the meeting of two stars, Orihime (Vega of the constellation Lyra) and Hikoboshi (Altair of the constellation Aquila). The festival is said to originate from the middle of 8th century, when the ancient Chinese festival to pray for good needlework skills was joined to the Japanese festival to pray for a good harvest. The Tanabata festival was first only held within the imperial court, but had spread among the ordinary citizens by the Edo period (around the 17th and 18th centuries).

The story behind Tanabata is quite romantic. Once upon a time in the universe, the stars Orihime (the weaving princess) and Hikoboshi (cow herder star) met and fell in love with each other. However, they were so much in love that, after the marriage, Orihime would no longer weave cloth and Hikoboshi would no longer herd cows. The god of the universe became mad, and separated the two by laying the huge Milky Way river between them. Ever since then, Orihime and Hikoboshi are allowed to see each other only once a year on Tanabata, the night of July 7.

The form of the Tanabata festival has changed as time has passed, and now people celebrate it by writing their wishes on small pieces of paper and hanging them on bamboo branches, sometimes with other decorations. Not many people practice the custom within their families any more, but we can still find bamboo trees in public places such as schools, local shopping arcades, or inside large retail stores.

The fun part of Tanabata is not only making a wish and writing it on a piece of paper, but also looking at other people’s wishes that are hanging on the bamboo branches. Here are just a few examples of the fun wishes : “I want my new car to be delivered as soon as possible.” (Maybe you should call your dealer and ask for that wish directly!), “I hope my wife gets back home every night.” (uh-oh, maybe it’s a bit too serious for Tanabata festival), “I want to marry someone from abroad.” (Hmm, this wish may come true). As you see, you can find a wide variety of wishes on Tanabata bamboo trees.

We are going to hold Milky Way ZUMBA lesson on the 8th of July 2014 celebrating Tanabata.

ZUMBA creates a party-like atmosphere that provides a non-intimidating opportunity for non-dancers, new exercisers, or those who have previously hesitated to participate in group classes.

This class is suitable for beginners who have no confidence doing 60 minute ZUMBA lessons.
